As content marketers, we all want to become one thing – thought leaders in our industries. By generating content, we show our respective audiences that we are knowledgeable about the industry we conduct business in. We then become thought leaders when our audience comes to us for information about said industry. If you’re hoping for a more rapid response to becoming an industry thought leader, read below.
1. Create a personal brand
You, as an entrepreneur, are your business. Thus, it’s just as important for you to have your own brand as it is for your business to have its own brand. Just like with any brand, think about what makes you unique? What is the story you want to convey to your audience? In creating your personal brand, remember that key word “personal.” Share stories that allow your audience to know who you are even if they’ve never met you so that you can establish a relationship and strong ties with your audience.
2. Network like crazy
People will only know about you if you really put yourself out there. Attend events in your area and speak with people who are unfamiliar with you. Offer to host or speak at an event if possible to exemplify your background and expertise within your field. People who believe and trust in you will speak highly about you and your business to those they know.
3. Write and get published
Another great way to meet people is through the Internet. Besides the necessary social media platforms, getting published is great for reaching readers on various media outlets. Be careful with which media outlets you choose, however. Make sure that they have the audience you desire and will be interested in your business.
4. Reach out to mentors and influencers
Mentors and influencers are those who have more experience than you and already hold established followers. Pick their brains about what they have seen and/or predict to occur in your industry. Read their own blogs and learn from their experience. Share their content, too! You never know, they may return the favor in the future.
5. Try new things
No one became a leader by doing what’s been done in the past. People become leaders by trying new things and putting themselves out there. Be bold in your writing and your thoughts, even if it is controversial. This will attract attention to what you post and drive engagement with your audience.
It does not matter how many years you have been working in an industry as long as you have passion and knowledge about it. Remember this as you expand your audience to become an industry thought leader. What else do you think is necessary to achieving this status?
